Interesting – from FF Close Calls

This has always been a concern with fire apparatus manufactures. Has to do with loose equipment on the outside of the apparatus. This is why you see more hose bed covers, and safety straps on truck now a days. Nothing worse that laying a 1000 feet of hose on the street.

MASSACHUSETTS WOMAN DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY RESPONDING APPARATUS HOSE LINE

Thursday, January 28, 2010

An 82-year-old woman who was struck by a hose line from the back of a Cambridge (MA) fire apparatus has died. She died today after that hose on the side of the Cambridge engine struck her on Tuesday.
The apparatus was responding to a call at about 1140 hours when one of the lines apparently slipped and then became dislodged - trailing behind the rig. When the engine company turned, the trailing hose struck the woman who was standing on the median island allowing the apparatus to pass.

What’s he or “we” doing? to the AFG?

Analyzing President Obama's state of the union address Full story at Washington post

Highlights: President Obama delivered the first state of the union address of his presidency, a 71-minute speech that ranked as the sixth longest in presidential history. (The famously long-winded Bill Clinton has four of the five longest speeches.) The White House posted its version of the highlights from the speech and you can read the whole thing for yourself; Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell delivered a solid if not spectacular Republican response that will likely cement his status as a rising star within the party. The gaffe of the night? That came from Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito who mouthed the words "not true" when the president condemned the recent Citizens United ruling.

On the fire side, is his halt to federal spending going to put a halt  to the assistance to firefighter grant program. It’s been a year to year funding for this program Could this be an end, better get your information in line for applying this year as it may be the last year for the AFG????

California FD’s Love their wooden ladders, guess there are pulses and minuses on your use of either wood or aluminum.
Aluminum can also fail when exposed to heat, as least with wood you can see how much of it has burned away.

Fire in the United States Now Available from USFA

USFA Press Office: (301) 447-1853

WASHINGTON – United States Fire Administrator Kelvin J. Cochran announced today the availability of the fifteenth edition of Fire in the United States. This edition of Fire in the United States covers the 5-year period from 2003 to 2007, with a primary focus on 2007. The purpose of the report is to aid the fire service, local leadership, and the general public with fire loss information which may be used to set priorities, establish and evaluate specific fire programs, and serve as a guide for fire data analyses at state and local levels of government.

Fire in the United States

“Since the inception of the United States Fire Administration in 1974, we have endeavored to provide the fire and emergency services the data it needs to combat the fire problem which still exists in the country. This fifteenth edition of the Fire in the United States will emphasize the areas which still need improvement so we may continue to reduce the nation’s fire losses, especially deaths and injuries.”

U.S. Fire Administrator, Kelvin J. Cochran

The report focuses on the national fire problem and provides an overview of fires and losses in buildings, vehicles and other mobile properties, and other properties. The report also examines fire and fire loss trends, fire casualties by population characteristics, and fire cause profiles by property type. Detailed analyses of the residential and nonresidential building fire problems will be published as stand-alone reports.

Fire in the United States is a statistical overview of fires in the United States, focusing on the latest year in which data were available at the time of preparation. The primary source of data is the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), along with data from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), State Fire Marshals’ offices, U.S. Census Bureau, and the Consumer Price Index.

Fire in the United States may be downloaded from the Statistics section of the USFA’s Web site. Printed copies are expected to be available at a later date.

Today is the the 115th anniversary of Butte`s Great Explosion.

It was about five minutes before ten o`clock on the night of January 15, 1895, that an alarm of fire was turned in from what has since come to be known as “Fateful Box 72,” located at the corner of Utah Avenue and Iron street. When the Central station appratus reached the scene of the fire the flames were bursting through the roof of the Kenyon-Connell warehouse. Then came the first great death dealing explosion. The exact time of its occurrence is given as eight minutes after ten, just thirteen minutes from the sounding of the alarm. More to read at Butte public library

Southampton man cut free after getting penis stuck in steel pipe

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/4838562.Trapped_manhood_cut_free_by_grinder/
A MAN who got his genitalia stuck in a steel pipe had to be cut free by eight firefighters using an industrial grinder.

The heavy duty cutting gear had to be used to remove the three-inch long hollow pipe after medics were unable to release it.

The painstaking operation, which involved eight firefighters, took around an hour.

The drama began after the man took himself to the accident and emergency department of Southampton General Hospital.

Restricted blood flow had left the man in a state of arousal, and unable to remove the pipe.

Staff there were so concerned that they phoned the emergency services and a crew from Redbridge Fire Station were initially dispatched.

But they had to bring in backup from St Mary’s station which has a fire truck equipped with specialist cutting gear.

A disc gutter cutter, with a four-and-a-half-inch blade, was used to slice open the stainless steel pipe.

The man, in his 30s, offered no explanation for his predicament but was said to be “quite concerned and anxious”. He had been given an anaesthetic to prepare for the procedure.

St Mary’s crew manager Adrian Johnson said: “It was a very delicate operation. We did not want anything heating up.

The person who did it deserves a commendation for his nerve and steady hand.”

Meanwhile, watch manager Greg Garrett from Redbridge station added: “I’ve only come across this type of thing three or four times in my 17 years as a firefighter. It’s not a daily occurrence.”

The man’s private parts were left bruised and swollen.

Methanol Hazards

Here is another source for some info:

The Emergency Management and Response--Information Sharing and Analysis Center (EMR-ISAC) examined the Methanol Safe Handling Manual (PDF, 918.7 Kb) published by the Methanol Institute. According to the Methanol Institute, the manual was designed to be a resource for current information on methanol's properties, potential environmental and health and safety hazards, safe handling practices, emergency response procedures, fire safety, and risk communication.
Known as "wood alcohol," methanol is a clear, flammable liquid with a faintly sweet pungent odor. Methanol occurs naturally and is produced synthetically. It is used in multiple products including plastics, paint, construction materials, as well as fuel in some race cars, monster trucks, go-carts, and model planes, boats, and cars. In addition, methanol is utilized for denitrification (i.e., nitrogen removal) in municipal wastewater treatment plants and can also be used as turbine fuel for electric power generation.
Ingestion can cause irreversible injury to the nervous system, blindness or death. Methanol causes eye, respiratory system, and skin irritation. The manual explains that methanol fires generate less heat, have nearly invisible flames in daylight, and produce very little smoke. Considering the risks, first responders may find the Methanol Material Safety Data Sheet (PDF, 33.4 Kb) a quick reference and companion to the Methanol Safe Handling Manual.
The EMR-ISAC confirmed that the Methanol Institute is offering a free DVD that can be another resource for training. The DVD discusses basic physical components, key risks of handling methanol, ways to minimize exposure, fire and release into the environment, and event response. For general operating procedures, first responders can also refer to the Emergency Response Guidebook, guide #131.

They walk among us...

Not mine, but interesting none the less, received via email, been around and started the new year off right. Makes you think?

IDIOT  SIGHTING:
We had to have the garage  door repaired. The Sears repairman told us that one of our problems  was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one Sears  made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said,  "Lady, you need a 1/4 horsepower." I responded that 1/2 was larger  than 1/4. He said, "NO, it's not..
Four is larger than two..."
We  haven't used Sears repair since.
IDIOT  SIGHTING:
My daughter and I went  through the McDonald's take-out window and I gave the clerk a $5  bill. Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her a quarter. She said, "You gave me too much money." I said, "Yes I know, but this way you  can just give me a dollar bill back." She sighed and went to get the  manager who asked me to repeat my request. I did so, and he handed  me back the quarter, and said "We're sorry but we cannot do that  kind of thing." The clerk then proceeded to give me back $1 and 75  cents in change..
Do not confuse the clerks at  McDonald's.
IDIOT  SIGHTING:
I live in a semi rural area.  We recently had a new neighbor call the local
township  administrative office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign  on our road. The reason: "Too many deer are being hit by cars out  here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing  anymore."
From Kingman , KS .
IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD  SERVICE:
My daughter went to a local  Taco Bell and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the  counter for 'minimal lettuce.' He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.
From Kansas City
IDIOT  SIGHTING:
I was at the airport,  checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, "Has anyone  put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?" To which I replied, "If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?" He  smiled knowingly and nodded, "That's why we ask."
Happened in   Birmingham ,   Ala.
IDIOT SIGHTING:
The  stoplight on the corner buzzes when it's safe to cross the street. I was crossing with an intellectually challenged coworker of mine. She  asked if I knew what the buzzer was for. I explained that it signals  blind people when the light is red. Appalled, she responded, "What  on earth are blind people doing driving?!"
She was a probation  officer in Wichita ,   KS
IDIOT SIGHTING:
We were  having a good-bye luncheon for an old and dear coworker, as she was leaving the company due to 'downsizing' Our manager commented  cheerfully, "This is fun. We should do this more often." Not another  word was spoken. We all just looked at each other with that  deer-in-the-headlights stare.
This was a lunch at Texas  Instruments.
IDIOT  SIGHTING:
I work with an individual who plugged her  power strip back into itself and for the sake of her life, couldn't  understand why her system would not turn on. A deputy with the  Dallas County Sheriff's office, no less.
IDIOT SIGHTING:
When my  husband and I arrived at an automobile dealership to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service  department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the  driver side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I  instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was  unlocked. "Hey," I announced to the technician, "It's open!" His reply, "I know. I already got that side.
This was at the Ford  dealership in Canton , MS  (NO WONDER FORD'S IN  TROUBLE!)
IDIOT  SIGHTINGS:
When I left Hawaii and was transferred to   Miami , Florida   , I still had the Hawaiian  plates on my car, as my car was shipped from Hawaii . I was  parking somewhere (I can't remember) and a Latino guy asked me "Wow,  you drove from Hawaii to here?" I looked at him and  quickly said "Yep. I took the  Hawaii/San Francisco Bridge". He  nodded his head and said, "Cool"!

STAY ALERT! They walk among us...
